Abstract: This guideline recommends interventions involving analgesics and adjuvant drugs, cognitive/behavioral strategies, physical modalities, palliative radiation and antineoplastic therapies, nerve blocks, and palliative and ablative surgery. The guideline also recommends changing restrictive legislation regarding the uses of opiod analgesics and third-party payer practices that do not reimburse for less-invasive interventions. Additional topics include managing procedure-related pain in adults and children as well as pain in special populations (neonates, children, adolescents, the elderly, substance abusers, minority populations, patients with psychiatric problems, and patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]).
Purpose: This guideline helps clinicians understand the assessment and treatment of cancer pain and associate symptoms.
